England Sacked the Vibes and Found Ollie Robinson in the Shed
Two years, 24 Tests, nobody looked. Then someone opened the door and he was still in there, holding a ball.

The shed
Ollie Robinson was left out of the England side for two years and 24 Tests. Nobody said dropped. Nobody said anything. He was 30, then he was 31, then he was 32, and the phone did not ring, and he did what every bowler who has ever been left out does, which is keep bowling in case it did.
In June it did. First Test of the summer, Lord's, New Zealand. First over back: three wickets, maiden. Five-for. Honours board. Two years in the shed and he walked out and did the thing he'd been doing in the shed the whole time. Nobody had checked.
How the era ended
Bazball didn't die at the Gabba or the SCG. It died at Trent Bridge on a Sunday morning, in a dressing room, on camera. Ben Stokes told the boys these were his last two days as captain and his last two days playing for England. The ECB filmed it and put it online. Then New Zealand won by 160 runs and took the series 2-1 and flew home.
McCullum went in July. Fleming came in on 30 July. Root got the captaincy back, because he's the one who never handed in the key. What the ECB said: a rigorous process. What happened: the New Zealander who was good at Tests was replaced by the New Zealander who was good at Tests before him.
The stumps
Post-Bazball England looks like this. Pakistan 171 all out on day one at Headingley, 135 on day three, beaten by an innings and 103 before tea. Pakistan 110 and 194 at Lord's, beaten by 194. Bowl at the stumps. Go to bed at eleven. Win by an innings. It was available the whole time.
Robinson took 8 for 80 at Headingley and 8 for 35 at Lord's. Player of the Match. Player of the Match. Since the shed: 23 wickets at 8.35. That is a club average. That is the average of a man bowling at his own kids on the back lawn. It is also the best bowling England have had since they started calling things eras.
It was England's first series win, in a series longer than one match, since December 2024. Two years. The shed was warmer than the team.
Ninety-nine
He goes to Edgbaston on Wednesday on 99 Test wickets. The graphic is ready. Pakistan have five debutants and could, out of pure spite, make him wait until Thursday. He has waited longer. He waited two years in a shed while England tried everyone else in the country and, briefly, the idea that you didn't need a bowler like him.
He will get the hundredth. He will not celebrate much. Men who've been in the shed don't. They just check the phone is still on.
