The ECB Opened the Door to Gambling Money for One Summer and Nobody Came In

Sold the tournament for £975m, lifted the ban on betting sponsors for 2026 only, waited. Every shirt is sponsored by an estate agent.

The rule

Since it started in 2021 the Hundred had a rule: no gambling sponsors. It was the family tournament. That was the whole pitch. Then the ECB sold stakes in all eight teams for more than £975 million, mostly to people who own IPL franchises, and the Oval Invincibles became MI London, and the Northern Superchargers became Sunrisers Leeds, a phrase nobody in Leeds has ever said out loud, and the new owners looked at the rule.

The door

In July the ECB lifted the ban. For one season. With conditions. Any deal had to clear a financial threshold. Any player could have the logo taken off his own shirt. Everything had to follow the industry code from the 2023 white paper. And from 2027, banned again.

So the offer was: we'd love your money, this summer only, it has to be a lot, our players can tape over you, and we're banning you in twelve months. Where do we sign.

Nobody signed.

What came in instead

The seating plan for a wedding at a golf club.
The seating plan for a wedding at a golf club.

On 1 June, kit launch, three teams had a front-of-shirt sponsor. The other five found one in the weeks before the opener. An online estate agent. A global logistics company. A health insurer. Two financial services firms. That isn't a sponsor list. That's the seating plan for a wedding at a golf club. All eight teams went into the tournament without a gambling logo, and the ECB was reported to be relieved, which is the natural state of a governing body that opened a door and hoped very hard.

There are two ways to read it. The generous one: the sponsorship market for English cricket is healthier than the teams claimed when they lobbied for the exemption. The other one: a bookmaker's marketing department doesn't build a campaign around a one-year deal with the ban already announced, because a bookmaker's marketing department can count.

Either way the ECB said yes to gambling money, banked the credit for banning it, and never had to cash a cheque. Cleanest piece of administration they've done in years. Happened by accident.

2027

The ban comes back next summer, in writing. The Indian owners have seen this before. Dream11 walked off the front of India's shirt in August 2025 when India banned real-money gaming, and the board sold the space to a tyre company for more. Logos vanish. Boards are fine. Boards are always fine.

Manchester Super Giants won the thing, by the way. Tim Seifert, 72 off 38. First title for a franchise that has had three names in five years. He's probably been told the fourth.

Things I loved

  • "Sunrisers Leeds." Say it out loud. Say it in Leeds.
  • Eight shirts, no bookmakers, one estate agent. The family tournament, by accident, for one more year.
  • Mitch Marsh scoring 416 runs for Sunrisers Leeds. A lot of runs to score in the service of a pun.
